Before buying a used car, use this checklist to reduce the chance of missing obvious problems.
Before you travel
- Run a MOT history check
- Ask for the registration and current mileage
- Ask whether there is service history and invoices
- Ask how long the seller has owned the car
- Ask whether any warning lights are on
- Check whether the MOT history shows repeated advisories
Paperwork checks
- Check the V5C logbook is present
- Check the VIN on the car matches the V5C
- Check the seller details make sense
- Review service records and repair invoices
- Consider a finance, stolen and write-off check before paying
Viewing checks
- Check tyres for wear, cracks and uneven tread
- Check brakes feel normal on a test drive
- Look for leaks under the car
- Check all lights, wipers and washers
- Check for warning lights on the dashboard
- Listen for suspension knocks over bumps
- Check the clutch, gearbox and steering feel normal
